Sick of the opinions and after the actual facts of the matter? Dive into award-winning economist Emily Oster’s world, who, after digging into the data, found that much of the conventional pregnancy wisdom (and advice) was wrong. In Cribsheet, she helps new and expecting parents make the best decisions for them when it comes to the first few years of parenting.

Armed with the data, Oster finds that the stories that have been shared over generations don't always hold up. She debunks myths around breastfeeding (not a panacea), sleep training (not so bad!), potty training (wait until they're ready or possibly bribe with M&Ms), language acquisition (early talkers aren't necessarily geniuses), and a ton more. She also shows parents how to think through freighted questions like if and how to go back to work, how to think about toddler discipline, and how to have a relationship and parent at the same time.

Editors notes

Economics is the science of decision-making, and Cribsheet is a thinking parent's guide to the chaos and frequent misinformation of the early years. Emily Oster is a trained expert--and mom of two--who can empower us to make better, less fraught decisions--and stay sane in the years before preschool.

Love

As an economist I knew I'd enjoy Emily Oster's books, but their unexpected benefit was that both Expecting Better and Cribsheet have been a helpful mental antidote to the unsolicited and highly emotive advice freely offered during pregnancy! This book helps reduce the noise and cut the guilt-trips. There is less available data in this than in Expecting Better, but this book is still useful and beneficial!

Scientific approach to parenting

I absolutely loved this book. It goes through some of the key parenting choices to be made from birth to pre-school and summarises the available scientific literature. While this sounds really boring it's done in a simple witty way that is not judgmental or pushy. It discussed that a lot of recommendations are based on some fairly poor scientific studies, but also highlights where we have good evidence. Overall this book helped to reduce my anxiety about certain choices (e.g. breastfeeding v formula, daycare etc) by providing the available information, but emphasising that family preferences are equally as important when making decisions. LOVE THIS!!!
