About as accurate as a detailed birth plan, but still.
When you have a brand new baby, or you’re growing one, asking “what will you be like?” is one of the nicer questions to ponder - especially when the world seems to be going down the toilet. We don’t have a magic mirror, portal to the future or the ability to give a foetus the Myer Briggs test (shame, we’d make a fortune!), so instead we’ve turned to the stars. About as accurate as a detailed birth plan and pulled together by someone who religiously reads horoscopes (but is not an astrologer), BEHOLD, your baby's personality revealed.
Aquarius (January 20 - February 18): The wild ride
These kids will keep you on your toes. Just when you think you’ve got them sussed, they’ll flip the switch and turn parenting on it’s head. But don’t worry, they’re charming, interested and clever, so while they seem to take their emotions to the extreme, it’s (usually) an enjoyable rollercoaster ride. Aquarians are known for having both social and book smarts, they display empathy and friendship early with people, animals and even their toys. They’ll be happy to play by themselves earlier than their peers, and their games will get intricate quick - you’re dealing with a mega mind.
Look out for: When baby and pet become BFF.
Pisces (February 19 - March 20) The trusting daydreamer
An imaginative day-dreaming baby, can also mean a dream baby. Quiet, thoughtful, relaxed and emotionally in-tune with their parents, a Pisces baby is happy as long as you are. Sure, when they are older you may have to deal with an overly sensitive, too-trusting teen who thinks they can turn the bad-kid good, ultimately having their heart smashed and blaming themselves, but that’s years down the track. For now, enjoy your dream kid - and maybe start teaching them self-love mantras early.
Look out for: Their big imagination that makes them believe impossible things every day.
Aries (March 21 - April 19): The physical powerhouse
The first of the fire signs, Aries are natural leaders: happy, confident, generous and game to give anything a go. In baby form this means they’re always on the go, loud (they love your attention), and may be rolling/crawling/walking before the rest of their cohort. Toilet training, however, might take a bit longer (they aren’t ones for sitting still). Being fiery means they’re a bit of a hot head: quick to cry or get frustrated, but also quick to smile and recover. TG.
Look out for: When they start climbing the stairs at 8 months.
Taurus (April 20 - May 20): The touchy-feely rule follower
Tauri babies crave two things: affection and routine. Mess with either and expect to get their horns. Their tendency to be ruled by their senses will present early: they like to be held close, swaddled tight, put everything in their mouth and will kick off when they’re nappy needs changing. Comfort for them will always involve cuddles and closeness - they’d happily have you rock them to sleep til they’re 12 - so expect sleep training to be extra trying. The saving grace is that they love routine, which will help in all their learning curves. They also display their likes and dislikes early, so it’s rare you won’t know what your little bull needs. It also means you’ll probably end up listening to Baby Shark on repeat, on every car ride, forever.
Look out for: Being such physical beings they want to touch everyone, so teaching them to be gentle early will save you from playground drama.
Gemini (May 21 - June 20) The busy genius
Bright, social and full of energy, saying gemini babies are a handful is an understatement. Their fast intellect means they move on from tasks and toys quickly, and rarely stay still. They’ll gravitate to what you’re interested in, so expect them to always have their hands on your phone. Rather than trying to keep them away from it, teach them to use it. Clever, but far from the reclusive type, these kids are chatterboxes. Expect a lot of questions, and the odd tall tale. Because of their big brain, they may struggle with decisions - they have to weigh up the pros and cons! Guide them and avoid giving them too much choice day-to-day, or you’ll be late for everything because they couldn’t decide what to wear.
Look out for: Opportunities to keep their brains busy: languages, instruments, computer games are all good ideas.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22) The nurturing homebody
To give it to you straight, Cancerian babies cry a lot. They feel all the feels, deeply, but once they have more ways to express themselves, they can be some of the easiest kids to raise because they lack the anger and aggressiveness that other kids struggle with. Sensitive, intuitive, ultra nurturing and happy to be home, Cancerians are intune with your emotions and won’t miss a thing (you’re going to have to be a good actor if you want them to believe in Santa). They love food and water, so expect weaning and bath time to be a joy rather than a chore, and get them into swim lessons as soon as you can.
Look out for: They’re penchant for baby dolls and how they gravitate to playing “mum”.
Leo (July 23 - August 22) The sensitive performer
The sign of the sun, these kids love to shine. People will comment on their big beaming smiles, and they will light up from the praise: they crave love, adoration and applause. Expect plays, songs and a lot of “watch me!”. Brave, almost fearless, mixed with a tendency to showoff, means you have to keep a close eye on little Leos. They can be fiercely competitive, so focus on teaching them fairness, and that losing isn’t the end of the world. Give them lots of creative outlets and praise them for their efforts. Leos are all tough on the outside but super soft on the inside, they need all the attention to let them know they’re loved.
Look out for: These kids are proud and will never forgive you for public telling off, so if you want to see change, have the big talks in private.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22) The mini grownup
These kids naturally want to take charge, which can come off as bossiness, but they are also earnest helpers, responsible and like to keep things neat and tidy. They basically come out primed for adulthood. They’re language driven: often early to talk, read and write, and they are smart. Be sure to make the rules very clear because they’ll look for a loophole. When their feelings get hurt, they’ll need your words as well as your hugs.
Look out for: What a hit she is with the other adults in your lives. A Virgos helpful nature and tendency to take themselves quite seriously make them super endearing.
Libra (September 23 - October 22) The generous harmoniser
The first to join a group, laugh loudly or share, Libras like to have a good time. They crave companionship, so will have a lot of great friends, but are very indecisive, so don’t ask them who their best friend is. You’ll be there all day. As newborns they’ll respond well to sound, music soothes them, so get ready to sing, and pick up a Shusher. When they’re older and babbling, they’ll want you to hold long conversations with them. With eye contact. They love eye contact.
Look out for: When their prized possessions start going missing, know that your generous kid has most likely given it away rather than lost it.
Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) The determined enigma
Even young Scorpios need their alone time. They are independant and secretive, but they also need lots of reassurance that they are safe and loved - it’s what allows them to be themselves! They see everything and forget nothing, play to win and can struggle with sharing. Keep their possessiveness in check by praising them when they are generous and giving them lots of one-on-one time. These little ones can go deep on an interest, and often become superfans. The human body tends to be their first true fascination. So get ready for some questions and games of doctor.
Look out for: Scorpios are drawn to magic and fantasy, making their childlike wonder all the more adorable. We hope you like Harry Potter!
Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) The wild wanderer
In years to come your pride and joy will be hitting you up for money from the mountains of Nepal - they love to travel and are dreadful with money - but for now, they’ll only want enough independence to crawl to the end of the hall. Sag babies love familiar faces, but need their own space too. They are fascinated by the world around them and have a wild streak, so get them out into nature as much as you can, and forget about trying to put them in shoes. They can be hilariously funny, have great imaginations and truly believe in the unbelievable. Indulge it. They aren’t great with rules, but are very logical, so if you explain why things need to be a certain way, they’ll abide.
Look out for: Their naked phase. Just hope it happens at four rather than twenty-four.
Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) The quiet achiever
These little goats are practical, decisive and goal-orientated. So you’re going to hear “no” a lot. They are happiest with a project, so books and shape sorters make great toys. With others, they can be shy, serious, stubborn and seem wiser than their peers. Often they might prefer to hang out with older kids, so encourage them to do so. They can seem all business but deep down they’re true romantics, and you’ll reap the benefits of this trait. Expect to be surprised with handpicked bouquets, special hugs and love letters.
Look out for: The serious face in class photos. They aren’t going to smile for just anyone.
