I just wanted on nice photo of myself. Just one, that maybe, in decades to come, my whole family would get a copy of for Christmas from a potential daughter-in-law who was trying to win my approval. Yes, I’m projecting The Family Stone as my future, but still. Everyone needs to have one, frameable, pregnancy photo. Pregnancy feels long while you’re in it, but in hindsight, it flies. A photo that captures you in this moment — your body, your bump, your life right now — is a beautiful keepsake for you, and the person inside that bump. That said, not everyone loves being in front of the camera, and not every “bump shot” feels like you. So here is our guide to doing it in a way that feels authentic and makes you feel comfortable, not cringe.
Find Your Timing
Most people find the sweet spot for maternity photos between 31–35 weeks, when your bump is prominent but you’re not too close to birth. Earlier, and you may not feel “pregnant enough” on camera. Later, and you may not feel like standing around posing.
Choose Your Setting
Think about where you feel most comfortable. For some, it’s a styled studio shoot. For others, it’s at home in bed, or barefoot in the garden. Your environment should reflect you — your vibe, your story.
What to Wear
Pick clothes that make you feel like the best version of yourself. Floaty dresses photograph beautifully, but so do jeans and a crop top if that’s more your style. Block colours tend to work better than busy prints, and softer fabrics capture light in a flattering way.
Make It Personal
Think beyond the bump silhouette. Include your partner, your kids, or even your dog if you want. Or keep it just you, curled up with a book or making a cup of tea. The photos will be more meaningful if they reflect your real life.
Comfort Is Key
It’s easy to forget, but being comfortable matters. Schedule the shoot for a time of day when you have energy. Bring water, snacks, and don’t be afraid to take breaks.
Find the Right Photographer (or DIY)
A good photographer who specialises in maternity photography will help you relax and guide you through poses that feel natural. If hiring a professional isn’t for you, use a tripod and natural light near a window. You don’t need fancy gear to capture a beautiful moment.
Remember the Why
This isn’t about looking a certain way. It’s about capturing you, right now, in a moment that won’t come again. However you choose to do it, make sure the result feels like you, so that when you look back, you’ll remember not just how you looked, but how you felt.
